Wedding's over, now what?

With the wedding planning madness behind us, Jer and I didn't know what to do next. So we both started Day Zero lists and I'm blogging about my journey here. I might occasionally update this blog with wedding things I see and like (mainly because I miss wedding planning)... but it will be few and far between.

So happy to finally be Mrs. Zimmer.

Bridal Registries

Jer and I have been working on completing our bridal registries lately, overall it's been tons of fun! Crate and Barrel is the most amazing store ever. I highly recommend registering there. They have the best stuff, great communication and they are really organized. We have had no problems with them whatsoever!

Our honeymoon registry was another HUGE success. :) We had the best time ever on our honeymoon and were able to go on so many great excursions thanks to our friends and family! (snuba, parasailing and and authentic luau are just a few) Highly recommend the honeymoon registry.

There is one place that I must say I do not recommend registering at. That would be Bed Bath & Beyond. Their customer service is embarrassing. Avoid them if you can - go with Target or just stick to a Crate & Barrel. 3 weeks after our wedding and we still haven't received our completion coupons - when we went in the store they basically told us there was nothing we could do. Really annoying, especially since you only have 3 months after the wedding to use them - opposed to the 2 years you get at C&B.

Bed Bath & Beyond: D (only thing saving them from an F is the 20% off coupons you get in the mail - oh their registry completion program is only 10% off... how does that makes sense?)

The day could not have been better - honestly. We had an amazing celebration with friends and family and we both are so filled with joy and love! Everything was fantastic - every last detail.

Vendor reviews to come - but one thing I have to say our DJ (Style Matters - Spencer) was AMAZING. I cannot say enough good things about him to get my point across. ALL NIGHT everyone was asking - who is this DJ - he is the best DJ I have ever heard at a wedding - and he seriously was. The dance floor was packed the whole night - we even extended an extra hour!!!!!!

Jer and I are pooped and have been sleeping/recovering all day! Off to Hawaii tomorrow! YAY!

2 weeks to go!

So I cannot even believe it - we are getting married in two weeks!! Last weekend we were at our good friends wedding in the beautiful Elkhart Lake, WI and it just made me SO excited that we're tying the knot! And now, with two weeks to go - I feel like time needs to start ticking!

I find it funny that everyone tells you that time starts flying towards the end - well, I think they are all wrong! Time flew for me months 6 - 1 month to go! At the month mark, days were dragging out, I was counting hours... minutes (OK not really counting the minutes but you get it)! And here we are - two weeks to go!!!

A brides brain gets really silly with just a few weeks to go. I've never been on such an emotional high - laughing one minute, crying the next, starving and eating like a mack-truck one minute, feeling like I could never touch a bite of food again. What is wrong with me?? It's totally excitement - because I'm not nervous at all - clearly Jer is my dream man (duh) and no matter what happens the wedding day, I know I'm marrying the only man on earth that can make me happy for the rest of my life! xo

While I have almost everything complete for the wedding (I guess it helps to be an event planner for a living), I have now found a new obsession to occupy my time. Weather checking. Yes, I know, I tell my clients all the time - there are two things in the world we can't control: The Weather and the Mail - but my word I try my hardest to do both! So, while I know the day will be perfect regardless, wouldn't it be just grand if our weekend was the first, crisp, fall weekend of the year? And (knock on wood) it's looking like we just might get that wish! ::big smile here::

Program Love

We got our first glimpse at our programs and the end result was true love. They are absolutely gorgeous. We used Etsy seller LizSage and couldn't be happier! The front says "Fallen" and the back says "Truly" with my favorite love quote of all time from the fabulous Jane Austen "We're all fools in love." <3

Yesterday was super productive! I went out to the suburbs and we got our cake topper and unity candle from The Wedding Etc in Downers Grove. I am super in love with the cake topper - it is so beautiful and totally unique. I had a hard time deciding if we actually wanted a cake topper but then I realized it was an important part of the cake cutting. I love that we just got a "Z"!

The unity candle is amazing. I've never seen anything like it! I'm loving that it's personalized and it's something we can keep as a great wedding memory.

After my trip to The Wedding Etc I went to Oak Brook Mall for some other errands. We got gifts for the Flower girls (which are clearly a secret!) and gifts for our friends Nick and Sarah that just had a baby! The Gap Kids is having an amazing sale right now for any Mom's out there.

Then the REALLY excited stuff started to happen! I went to Zabler Jewelers in Clarendon Hills to get our wedding bands. I'm so in love with them. As soon as I tried it on I didn't want to take it off. We had them engraved with "Be Mine 9.25.09" - "Be Mine" by David Gray is our first dance and a special song to us so we love the engraving.

After the rings it was off to my first dress fitting! (I would post pics but I know Jer will read this and we don't want him seeing the dress before the wedding.) This was by far the highlight of my day. I am so in love with my dress and when I was wearing it all I could think about was walking towards Jer and marrying the love of my life. Such a strong wave of emotion hit me and I just cannot wait for the big day to be here! We're getting so close!

My Bridal Shower

My bridal shower was this past Saturday - we had it at Lake Hinsdale Village in Willowbrook. It was a gorgeous day - My MOH, Leslie and Mom put together a beautiful day for me. My bridesmaids were so supportive and couldn't have been better friends!

My mom had some really fun games for everyone to play - at first I wasn't sure how I felt about games, but everyone loved them. The first was a board that had guests guess how old I was at certain phases in phases of my life. It was a great game because it showed pics of me throughout life and it was a game that guests could do when they wanted. The second game was giving prizes out (wine, wine coolers, lux soaps) to the person who's gift I was opening - it was so simple and everyone got into it! The final was at the end of the shower and I got quizzed on how well I knew Jer. For every question I got right, Jer and I got something for our honeymoon - sandals, towels, robes... it was SO cute!

The shower was a wine theme - which is so Jer and me!!! I just had a great time - it was a fantastic day! We loved seeing all our friends and family!!

Less Than 2 Months To Go!

I can't believe it! I'm less than two months away from marrying the love of my life! Sometimes it hits me and I just get so overwhelmed with emotion (in the best possible way). We celebrated the two month mark by heading out to Cooper's Hawk, where the sweetest waiter told us we were some of the nicest people to come into the restaurant. That really made our day.

So since we only have 2 months to get everything done, my to do list is below. I don't have that much and honestly, I'm not super worried about getting things done. I am just SO happy that the invites are in peoples hands!

Trash the Dress

Jer and I are officially scheduled for a "Trash the Dress" photo shoot with Kara Schultz! I couldn't be more excited. Both Jer and I have wanted to do this since we first learned of the idea.

Kara already seems amazing (check her site out for some amazing TTD shots, I can't save them to my computer so they aren't in this post). She is super responsive, nice and clearly into her work. We'll be doing the shoot in a field and possibly in some more urban locations as well. I'm so excited for the field/barn shots because most of our wedding shots will be in the city, so we'll have an awesome mix.

Yeah, we did it. We booked the wedding transportation today through M&M limousine. It was a long process, but all-in-all, I'm really happy with our choice. We had a gift certificate for a rival company and M&M beat their price even with the coupon.

Do I Reallly Need a Limo??!?

Back in January, Jer and I were thinking about our wedding budget and how we thought it was even possible to pay for a wedding together on our less than stellar incomes. We went through our wedding budget, and we slashed things we don't need: custom cocktail napkins, signature drink, calligraphy on our invites (DIY thank you very much!), menus at place settings, a ridiculously beautiful diamond encrusted wedding band (I'm sure my DF will get this for me on an anniversary) and one thing we cut was day-of transportation.

Ok, I must admit I am struggling with this one. I think it is necessary for the bridal party to have a limo/trolley (I loveeee the idea of a trolley) and I think we can include this in the overall budget. It's not THAT expensive, and I can be frugal. I just want transportation to pre-ceremony pictures, ceremony, post-ceremony pictures and the reception. After that, we don't need them.

Jer and I are obsessed with the idea of taking a Chicago cab to the hotel after the reception - how Chicago, how US! We love it and we're doing it. But I just can't imagine making our bridal party take cabs - it just sounds so tacky.

So if it means a few less days of eating out, not shopping on RueLaLa, and really not having that beautiful diamond ring, so be it. I want transportation, I think it's a must.

Ready to be a Mrs

Just a quick post to say that I am ready to be a Mrs. I am so incredibly ready to be Jer's wife it is crazy! We have 137 days to go and that seems like an eternity, but really it isn't considering we have been engaged for 374 days - so we're just about 75% of the way to married life.

This past weekend we had our families over for Mother's Day. It was a huge success and it was the first time we used some of the items off our registry that we got at our engagement party. I was excited to use them, but at the same time I got weirdly sad because I just want to be married. All the pretty things in the world don't add up to the excitement, happiness, exhilaration of walking down the aisle towards the man of my dreams, the future father of my children and the only man in the world that makes me blissfully happy.

I'm so ready.

MyMyst Tanning

Last night I ventured out to Bella Bronze Tan to explore the latest Mystic Tan product: MyMyst Tanning. First, I have to say that Bella Bronze Tan might be the nicest tanning salon I have ever been in. They have awesome regular beds, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful (maybe too friendly...) and they have a great line of products.

After viewing all of their beds, I decided to try MyMyst tanning for the first time. I wanted to get a good idea of what the spray tan from a booth would look like, and see if this is the route I'd want to go for the wedding.

The only downer for MyMyst is that it is SUPER expensive.... they wanted $35 for ONE session or $69 for 5. I clearly purchased the 5 because I couldn't justify spending $35 on one session from a booth. I know this was a risk, I was hoping it would pay off in the end and I'd have 4 more sessions to enjoy later during the summer.

I decided to try the bronze original formula and I added a scent: Lime Coconut. What they do is mix up your formula with the scent and then they load it in the front of the booth. They claim this is nice because then the formula isn't stored in the bed and expanding/contracting because of the heat - and therefore the old Mystics cause streaking.

Once the cartridge is loaded, I got ready to experience MyMyst tanning for the first time. You walk into the booth and place your hand in front of a sensor. The booth than talks to you and walks you through the entire process. You get sprayed four times in four different positions. I loved the spray from the MyMyst WAY better than normal Mystic. It doesn't suffocate you the way a normal Mystic does.

After the spraying I got out of the booth, dried off and walked home. I immediately noticed that I didn't have the gross spray tan scent, and I actually smelled good!! My body had a very nice bronze tint to it immediately as well. I knew that I had to wait until the morning to see how well the results really were... so fast forward to this morning and I am VERY pleased. No streaks, not orange and minimal scent (still a slight hint of smell, but nothing compared to Mystic). The only problem was user error....I put the guard lotion too far up my foot and one of my feet is now two tone. Oh well, I'll try and fix that using self tanner!

So my verdict is that this is a great alternative to airbrush tanning. BUT I think I'll stick with airbrush for the wedding... only because even the slightest chance of user error causing some part of my body to be two toned just isn't a risk I'm willing to take...

Invites...an update

So I am tackling the task of creating my own invitations. So far, it has been quite the process. As previously noted, I ordered all of my supplies from Cards and Pockets. I received the supplies and they are really fantastic. One problem, if you order the pre-cut invitations, response cards or inserts, good luck printing on them. I went to several different locations around Chicago, Kinkos, Alphagraphics, etc and none of these locations could print on pre-cut paper. So I have to return these pre-cut materials and order regular 81/2 x 11 card stock. Then, I will take the paper to Kinkos and have them cut them down to size.

My experience with Kinkos started off horribly. I walked in and asked if they could print me a proof on the pre-cut paper. As it turns out, they can't do that, but instead of offering me other options, the gal basically said, "Can't do it" and walked away. Ridiculous. So I wrote a letter to Kinko's customer service and the manager gave me a call and we sorted everything out. She printed out some proofs for me on regular card stock. Although they didn't cut them, I was able to cut the pieces somewhat to size to see what the end product will look like (ignore all the markings, we're still editing!!):

The photo isn't the best because I took it from my phone, but it gives the general idea. I'm really excited, I think they are turning out just the way I want them to. I designed everything using Publisher, so far, so good. Fingers crossed the rest turns out just as well.

I'll post a finished product as soon as they're all done (probably a month or so away from that point).

5 months to go!

Well, we've officially hit the 5 month mark and I'm very excited. The wedding seems to be creeping closer and closer - I can't wait until it is here! We've gotten a lot accomplished, but still have what feels to be, tons to go.

Here's what we have left:
- Invites (I got the paper and envelopes, we just need to print and address)
- Wedding Bands (we picked them out from a cute jeweler in downtown Clarendon Hills, Zablers, just need to purchase, engrave)
- DJ song list - super fun! We know that our garter toss song will be "Legs" by ZZ Top
- Favors
- Shower Preparation
- Rehearsal Dinner Invites and coordination
- Dress Alterations (I really hope Mary Catomy can fit me in!!)
- Jewelry Selection
- Hair/Makeup trials
- Out of Town Bags (slowly collecting everything for these)
- Honeymoon prep (FUN: buying new clothes, bathing suits, shoes, etc for the HM)
- Ceremony Musicians
- Pre Cana

I think that is everything. It's not too bad, but it still feels like a lot. We obviously will have lots to do the last month with table assignments, programs, place cards, table numbers, etc, but one step at a time. The good news is... we're getting closer!! :)

Cake Follow Up

So in my previous post about our experience with Toni Sweets, I mentioned how displeased I was about how the tasting went - aka the forgot about our appointment (and I had a paper trail proving the correct date/time).

Anyway, their fantastic sales manager shot me an email today and let me know that we are not getting charged any additional fee's for our upgrades - now that is CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Yay to no extra charges!

Just to recap their cakes are delicious, like a little bit of heaven in your mouth.

Welcome to the Good Life

Jer and I live an amazing, fun, super, wonderful life. Yeah, we've had a lot of fun the past three years, and this post is like a "year-book" to those fantastic memories.

1. Jer is a Badger, I think I'm a Badger, therefore we go to Badger games and visit our amazing friends up in Madison. Classic Jer pose, he's adorable, right?

2. Up in Bear Lake, Wisconsin - we rented a jet ski for my bday. Jer's first time out and he was a pro (but I got to drive the very first time!!) We had such a great time, and our other SheVegas friends came to visit for the day!

3. Wow another pic from Madison (we must like it up North or something) - Halloween 2007, so ridiculous. I loved my spray tan - if you can't tell from the orange skin I'm rockin...

4. Buffett 2008, aka Jer's day of binge-drinking. This is such a great pic because I literally dragged my one and only to the concert and he is basically passed out on me right here... Fins up!

5. Of course - our engagement. The most amazing, perfect, fantastic, love-filled day of my life. I love this picture, it is probably my favorite picture of us.

I can't wait to see what the future has in store for us!

Mis n Jer Heart Cake

This weekend we went on our cake tasting at Toni Sweets in Hinsdale. The appointment didn't start out great - they had forgotten about us basically. They realized the mistake they had made and were very friendly/nice the rest of the appointment. We have to use them because it is included in our package with the Tower Club, if we didn't HAVE to use them, I probably would have said, "Next" and moved on...

Except we asked for the "waves" to be a little more subdued.

As for our flavors, the bottom layer will have a cheesecake filling (SO delicious) and the top two layers will be an apple/cinnamon filling with vanilla cake. I can't even begin to start with the invites... the problem is I had a really cool design and Jer and I loved it. But I don't know how it would print, how to package everything together, etc. It's driving me slightly insane today.

I also am not sure on the design - I was so adament on designing our own invites (since I designed the Save the Dates) but now I kind of don't want to... is that bad? Normal? Yikes!

This is my last post for this seriously cold/snowy (most of it's melted, thank God) lazy Sunday, but I had to share. I've been dying to order my veil and shoes for the past few months and today was the day - basically because Jer and I decided to have a super lazy day (see his tweet @JDZimmm).

So I went to veilshop.com to look at a few veils. Since my dress is the epitome of simple elegance, I love it so, I wanted my veil to compliment this look. I decided to browse through what other Knotties have done with their veil/dress - I'm not posted what dress I have because Jer loves to read this (and yes, he's making peanut butter cookies right now - God bless him!).

It was down to two veils - the one I've wanted for the past 6 months and a new veil that I just found today.

After some debate, I went with the veil I've loved for the past 6 months. For a number of reasons. 1. It's just classic. I think it will completely compliment my dress and I've loved it for 6 months. 2. It was $40 less expensive than the new veil. So I spent $42 on a veil - rock on.

Next stop - shoe shopping. I've been thinking about the Kenneth Cole Reaction shoes since I tried them on at the beginning of the month. To me, this is a sign that they are meant to be. They're gold, they're comfy, they're affordable - all good things. I get to Kenneth Cole's site and they're offering 30% off sandals - um SCORE! I'm on a total high and then - BOOM, they're out of my size. So I'm totally bummed but I don't give up hope!

I started browsing the Internet and found my sandals on shoes.com...after some careful research I see that I qualify for free shipping and I find this promo code: y98shoes and get 20% off. It's not the 30% I would've gotten from KC - but I got free shipping so I'm happy. All together I spent just over $100 on my veil and shoes - and that makes me happy, plus the sun is now shining and the cookies are just about ready... it's going to be a good week.

So the last week flew by faster than I ever could have imagined. I was on show site in the fabulous Las Vegas - and all in all I think it was tremendous. But enough about work... on to the wedding!

I think the cutest thing that Jeremiah said to me upon my arrival back home was, "I was so bored I started to look at wedding magazines." How cute!? We have a few wedding details we want to get done tomorrow/Saturday. First, we are going to look at linens - I already know what I want, just a matter of finding it. We're going to meet with Classic Party Rentals (formerly Chicago Party Rentals) because my mom is friends with the owner, hopefully that equals some saved $$.

We also need to find our wedding bands - we're officially past the 6 month mark (still in shock over here) and we found out that Robbins Bros. is filing Chapter 11. Awesome. So we put a deposit down on the band I wanted to Robbins Bros. but we may go get a refund and have something custom made on Jewelers Row. We shall see - and more to come on this topic.

Off wedding related - I'm kind of addicted to Facebook today. Pick 5's, quizzes, etc. It's like heaven for someone who is too tired to do anything, but too awake to go back to bed (did you catch that?). I just took a quiz to find out who I was in a past life: Queen Elizabeth I. And for those who know me well, it's totally true!

So we met with Music by Design and Style Matters - so far Spence with Style Matters is a much better choice than Music by Design for SO many reasons. We were able to sit with Spencer and have a great talk about the music we like, the feeling we're going for, our favorite bands - and he is a Badger which is always a plus! :) We met with Jeff from Music by Design - and we weren't very impressed.

I do like the planning tools that Music by Design offers - but I think Spencer can do all that and MORE without those tools. So, the verdict is: Spencer w/Style Matters!! .... Check!

Shoes

Wedding Transportation

So Jer and I are at the point where we need to decide on transportation for the wedding. This gets tricky because to us city dwellers it just makes sense to have our guests use cabs or drive (there is a parking lot at the church and near the Tower Club). So we don't think that we'll use a transportation service for our guests. BUT we do want something for us and our bridal party. Below are the limo companies I have been researching. The list is long, but it is super helpful to get everything in one place.

1. A Dynasty Limo - Based in Downers Grove, A Dynasty Limo's offers Rolls Royce Limo rentals - which is very appealing to Jer and I. However, the price is a bit high and we think we could find a better deal. For 3 hours in a Rolls it is $695 - though this package does include champagne and the "Just Married" sign on the back. What is appealing about getting a separate car for Jer and I is that we'd have some privacy. A Dynasty also offers 8 - 10 passenger limos (which is too small for our bridal party) and those packages start at $350 for 8 and $399 for 10 (that is the 3 hour package).

2. Vintage Ride - The other option for a cool car to getaway in we found from this company. I'm thinking that the trolley's they offer are kind of dated, but the vintage cars they have are very cool - and more affordable than A Dynasty. Vintage has a '48 Chrysler, '54 Cadillac and an Excalibur. They cost $450 for a Saturday Wedding (3 hours) and $285 for a Friday Wedding (3 hours). The trolley is $750 for a Saturday or Friday Wedding (3 hours). We're definitely considering the vintage car (I love the '54 Caddy) but maybe going elsewhere for a trolley or limo for the bridal party.

3. Limos Without Limits - This place just seems cool - right on their homepage you can request a quote for a private jet charter - how awesome is that?? They also have the antique car rentals and it looks like you can rent just for an hour - so it'd be perfect as the getaway from the reception. Their Rolls is $225/hour. They also have the following (best in list form bc they have so many options!):

14 passenger Excursion: $225/hr
18 passenger Escalade EXT: $300/hr (the one we're leaning towards)
22 passenger Escalade: $300/hr
22 passenger Hummer: $300/hr
24 passenger Excursion: $300/hr
26 passenger Ultimate Limo Lounge: Pricing is dependent on length of use and location

4. At Your Service Limousines - They offer a wedding package that includes Champagne, Beer, Bottled Water, Color Coordinated Decorations, Just Married Sign, Red Carpet, and Chauffeur in Tuxedo. Also, it is important to point out that their prices include gratuity.

20 passenger Hummer: $1,160/3 hours
22 passenger Escalade: $1,060/3 hours
22 passenger Excursions: $900/3 hours
14 passenger Excursions: $960/4 hours
10 passenger Limo: $480/4 hours
8 passenger Limo: $408/ 4 hours

They also offer discounts for Friday and Sunday weddings and all pictures of the vehicles can be found on their Website.

5. Elegant Trolley's LTD - We've always loved the idea of a trolley and this company seems to have it all! Their trolley's look much nicer and cleaner than the first post - so if we go the trolley route, we'll most likely use these guys.

Friday & Sunday Weddings:

3 Hour Package (includes the Floral upgrade - $95 value): $825
4 Hour Package (includes the Floral upgrade - $95 value): $925
5 Hour Package (includes the Floral upgrade - $95 value): $1,025

Saturday Weddings:

6. Royalty Limousines - Their prices are very competitive so I would recommend them to brides on a budget. There limos look nice as well and they offer discounts for Friday's and Sunday's.

Honeymoon!

So, I think the most exciting part of planning the wedding other than the thought of marrying Jer, was planning our honeymoon. Jer and I had the best time looking at locations and thinking about where we wanted to spend our first few weeks as a married couple.

We knew we wanted to be somewhere warm and sunny - but we were concerned with hurricane season in the Bahamas/Florida (didn't really want to go to Florida in Sept anyway - WAYY too hot). So luckily for us my mom is an amazing travel agent and a honeymoon specialist and was able to help us out!

We decided on (drum roll please).... Hawaii!!! We'll be spending 7 nights on Maui - specifically in Ka'anapali at the Westin. My dad's cousin is generously giving us his timeshare for the week. The resort looks amazing - every room is guaranteed an ocean view. Plus they stock up the fridge with whatever snacks, drinks, etc that you'll need for the week. A few pics below:

Needless to say, we're super excited about staying in Maui. We have already booked a few excursions, such as the Road to Hana and the Old Lahaina Luau (I've heard it's the best on the island). I'm also super pumped to get some shave ice.

After our time in Maui we will go to Oahu for 4 nights and stay at the Royal Hawaiian. We were debating between Kauai and Oahu, but went for Oahu because we wanted to see some of the night life that Hawaii had to offer. While we are in Oahu we will be visiting Pearl Harbor because it is something that I've always wanted to see. We also plan on going to Duke's because we're HUGE Jimmy Buffett fans and love the song "Duke's on Sunday." If you haven't heard it - download it now because it is amazing.

So today has been an amazing day!! It was the first time I was invited to speak on a panel discussion for the Chicago Ad Federation's Career Day. It was an amazing experience. I spoke about the company I work for and how to get into event marketing. I could not have been more nervous going into today, but right now I feel like I am on cloud nine. Seriously.

I realized that I'm actually a great public speaker - something I thought I was terrible at! And with a little confidence I can get where I need to go! Ok, enough inspirational talk... but WOW, what a high!

Choosing a DJ

So, Jer and I are at the point where we need to pick our DJ. It is something that I have been putting off for quite awhile in hopes that we would win the lottery and be able to hire a band, but alas, that has not happened so we're settling on the economic solution of hiring a DJ. I've read several posts on "The Knot" about the best DJ's (and the worst!) so I wanted to compile what I have discovered in one post.

1. Music By Design - We met Tony at the Hinsdale Wedding Walk and he was seriously awesome. I was totally in love when he asked me, "What's the one thing you are looking for in a DJ?" and I said, "No Cheese" and then he points to his business card and it reads "No Cheese." So hilarious! Well I followed up with Tony and am super impressed. They have an awesome online music management tool that allows you to pick your songs, and gives you a music library to choose from. It's really quite impressive and already helpful - you can use it before you book with them (we haven't booked yet). The only negative to Music By Design is the cost - it's pretty pricey for everything we want. I love how they keep telling us that you pay for the good quality, when in this economic environment I think they should be happily reducing rates (to the acceptable amount, of course!). But that is another post.

2. Toast And Jam - For whatever reason the lady that I was working with at Toast and Jam just wasn't that great. Maybe I couldn't judge tone, maybe I just didn't like her name (it's possible!) but I just wasn't that impressed. We were going to do an in-person meeting but I was just so not into it that we cancelled. However, I'm debating going back and rescheduling the meeting since they get top marks from the gals on the Knot.

3. Style Matters - Ok, so they get another RAVE. Thus far, working with Spencer has been a dream come true. My only concern is that from what I've heard he is super non-cheese, and we like a little cheese - like a few pop-tunes ala Michael Jackson are totally fine. I just am worried that we'll be a little too mainstream for him, but we do have an inperson meeting with Spencer and I'm super excited to meet him. Their prices are the best so far - $200/hour, though they don't offer Friday discounts. Still, super excited about Style Matters. Only negative is that I don't think they have the super helpful planning tools like Music by Design - but I'll update the post once I learn more (so there may be no negatives at all!).

4. Show on the Road Productions - So my mom made me look into these guys since she's used them in a past event. I was not impressed. By far the most expensive and most un-responsive. I would avoid them at all costs - but that is just me!

So, this is where we stand on the fun DJ selection! I'll update the post once a decision has been made.

We did decide on our FIRST DANCE - which Jer and I are so excited for (it's a surprise, but guess if you want!). And we'll walk into the reception to Viva La Vida from Coldplay - how awesome is that?

Assumption Catholic Church

We've decided to get married at Assumption Catholic Church, downtown Chicago. The church is beautiful inside! We love that it is a cozy feel and not too big or too small. It's just right. It is also near The Tower Club so we'll have a quick transfer over to the reception site. Very exciting!

We had our engagement party this past summer (I know I'm late posting pics) at Grace O'Malley's. The food was good and the drinks were even better - don't think you can go wrong with an Irish Pub! (Posting these now makes me wish it was not snowing outside - and the coldest day of the year)

Our closest friends and family were there and we really had a great time. After the party we went back to our place and played Rock Band (so much fun!) as well as opened a few gifts (I got my KitchenAid!!!!). It was also one of my bridesmaid's birthday so we had to go out for a little celebration for that as well!! She's a great friend sharing her bday w/our engagement party, seriously!!!

We love the fall shades so we're going with espresso and burnt orange. The bridesmaid dresses will be the espresso color and the girls will carry a bouquet of burnt orange flowers wrapped in an espresso satin ribbon. All invitations, save-the-dates, etc will come in this color scheme as well.

We decided on the bridesmaid dress as well! The picture is below - but the dress will come in mocha. We ordered from VIP Occasions in Elmhurst and they are AMAZING! I also got my dress there - and I highly recommend them. The service was amazing, they give you a discount if you order your dress from them. Also, Jer's tux rental is free since my dress is from VIP.

Basically this shop is the ultimate one-stop-shop and they cater to your every need.

The Tower Club

It's been awhile since I've last blogged! Jer and I have finally picked a venue location - The Tower Club on the 39th floor of the Lyric Opera House. We immediately fell in love with the venue for a number of reasons:

It is an intimate setting - I would say the most people you could comfortably fit in the Club would be 150, which is perfect because we are aiming for 125 attendees.
It has a vintage, old world, feeling (and the chairs are AMAZING - definitely no chair cover required).
The coordinator is incredibly helpful and willing to negotiate - the deal we are getting is unbeatable.
They host Friday night weddings and offer a discount on the room rental.
There is a separate area for the cocktail reception, lounge, children's room, bridal room & reception. It really is amazing - you get an entire floor!!
The view - simple as that, if you love Chicago, you MUST check the view out!
The menu - great food and the menus are customizable - they are super flexible with the menu options and everything looks amazing. Oh, and a wedding cake is included in the package!!
It is linked to the Lyric Opera House - very cool if you are into cultural Chicago!

We're Engaged!! What Next?!?!?

So after the most amazing night of my life, Jer and I were a little caught off guard on what we should do next. Everyone who has been married, is married or knows of someone that is married is willing to give you their advice. Here's what you do, you should do this, etc. It's great, at first, but it does get to be a little overwhelming.

So here are the first five things that Jer and I did, they worked so far and hopefully they'll help you out with your wedding planning as well.

1. Relax This is the most amazing time of your lives. That is something Jer and I still tell each other. There will not be another time when the world stops to celebrate you as a couple. So relax and enjoy the moment. Things will work themselves out - whether it's selecting your bridal party, picking a venue or working on that darn budget - things will work themselves out. Which brings me to my next point.

2. Set the Budget And stick to it! The budget sets the scene for the wedding - it will help you with a variety of items, such as picking a venue, florist, band vs DJ, wedding cake, gown and more. If you know there are a few items that you are willing to go 'all out' on, then put an accurate number of what you are willing to spend for that item. The budget also will help you decide how many people are in your bridal party. The budget also helps with selecting a date. You can find savings by having your wedding on a Friday or Sunday as opposed to a Saturday Wedding. Also, May - June/September - November are the most popular in the Midwest, so you might want to consider an "off season" wedding - like January/February.

3. Set the Date So you are relaxed, you have your budget, now it is time to 'set the date.' This is an exciting part! Think about the time of year that best relates to you as a couple. Do you want an indoor/outdoor wedding. Consider family birthdays and holiday's as well.

4. Pick a Venue Keeping your relaxed state, budget in mind and your ideal date - you are now ready to pick a venue. Picking a venue can be the hardest or easiest part. I recommend making a list of 'must haves' and 'nice to haves.' For us, a 'must have' was that it needed to be downtown Chicago and have windows. A 'nice to have' was that it would be related to a cultural part of the city. Keep an open mind when you are looking at venues as well - we ended up going with the venue that I thought I wasn't going to like. Turns out, it was perfect. Also, ask the important questions when you are on a site visit - and GO on site visits. Definitely visit the venue before you book it. Some good questions to ask:

What is included in the price?
Do you offer discounts for Friday/Sunday weddings?
What time do we get the space the day of our wedding?
Do you do multiple events at the same time?
Is a tasting included?
Do we have to use a list of preferred vendors, i.e. florists, bakers, etc?
Can we bring our own liquor or do we have to use a liquor package?
Is there a room rental fee?

5. Pick your Bridal Party It is good to let those closest to you know that you would like them to be a part of your big day as early as possible. Especially the close friends and family that are out of town. When you are selecting your bridal party, traditionally you would fill the following roles:

Maid of Honor
Bridesmaids
Best Man
Groomsmen
Flower Girl
Ring Bearer
Ushers
Readers

Select your friends or family member that will help you and have supported you along your journey as a couple. And let them know formally - I sent out a cute arrangement of flowers to my bridesmaids to ask them to be in my wedding, it said, "Please say 'I do' to being my bridesmaid." It's a nice touch, but the ask doesn't have to be that formal. A phone call or lunch - but I recommend something personable.

Now you are on your way to the most amazing day of your life!!

Jer came and picked me up from work around 4pm. I was at a VIP reception for work and thought that I needed to get home and change to be back at work for an all-night event. Jer, however, had other plans.

On our drive home, Jer took a 'wrong' turn and took us to our favorite spot near the Adler Planetarium. He told me on our way that he wants to keep me guessing because I knew that the proposal was coming. I'll be honest - I thought for sure that he was going to propose to me on May 3 (the following Saturday) so I believed him that he was just planning a random romantic surprise.

We got out of our car and Jer takes out the most beautiful picnic basket I have ever seen, along with a chest full of two of our favorite bottles of wine from Cooper's Hawk. It was very 'James Bond' of him and I was still un-suspicious (if you can believe that). We had the world's most amazing wine and cheese picnic, and I honestly thought that life couldn't get any better than it was at this moment.

Jer had another surprise up his sleeve. We have an email chain that has been going on since we met called, "Remember When." We write back and forth to each other saying, "Remember when ". At this point I was teary eyed and slightly suspect, but still thought I had to return to work and there was NO way it was happening right now. I asked Jer to go for a walk with me around the lake (there was a thunderstorm rolling across the city that looked amazing).

After our walk, we returned to our picnic and I started to sit down. Jer told me to keep standing as he got down on one knee and asked: "Remember when we came down to our favorite spot and I asked you to be my lover and best friend forever? Will you marry me?" I couldn't wait to say 'yes' and the celebration began!

What couldn't have been more than a minute and a half later, the skies opened up and a beautiful rain began to fall. Instead of running for shelter, though, we just stayed there for awhile.

It was perfect.

Welcome to our Love Story

I decided to start a blog to follow the journey that the love of my life, Jer, and I are currently on. We met roughly two years ago during a summer internship. Jer was the handsome employee and I was the intern. After a few flirty emails and after work phone calls, we decided to hit the town together. What happened next is what Jer likes to refer to as, "the kind of fireworks that people wait their whole life to experience," and he's right.

After our first few dates we became inseperable. Football games, wine tastings, concerts - you name it, Jer and I were there together. The work day seemed to last longer and longer everyday, and we both were looking forward to the five o'clock whistle when we could see each other again.

Finally, it was time for the next step - moving in together!! After 10 amazing months of dating, we decided to give co-habitation a try. The honest truth is that the first month was difficult - but we both knew there was no one else we'd rather be with and that was what was important. So, we decided it was time for the NEXT step - getting the most adorable dog ever!!! (fooled you!)

I knew that Jer was the one almost as soon as we started dating. He makes me laugh, knows my likes (AND dislikes - which is sometimes more important), he's my best friend, he listens, he's the most gorgeous man I've ever met (inside and out), he takes care of my when I'm sick and most importantly, he is my better half - the only person in the world that I can spend forever with.

So, you can understand why after living with each other for almost a year, I was more than ready to have him ask me to marry him. And finally, on May 2, 2008, all of my dreams came true.
